A cultural interlude – Is astronomy of interest?
Sutherland, the coldest town in South Africa, sits 1550 metres above sea level. It was founded in 1855 and today subsists mainly as a farming community. It is well known as the star gazing capital with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) recently opened at the South African Astronomical Observatory. There are also many 4x4 routes, walks, a museum, an Anglo Boer War graveyard and much more.
For sports enthusiasts, there is an 18 hole golf course, tennis courts and also a yoke pin course.
The average minimum temperature is 3 degrees Celcius over the whole year and the average maximum is 20,5º C.
