Take a break and head for the country!
When the Cape of Good Hope was no more than a tiny settlement, Governor Simon van der Stel ventured eastwards to explore this wild and untouched land. He stumbled upon the Eerste River in the summer of 1679 and called the area Van der Stel se Bosch (Van der Stel's Bush). Today that same spot is known as Stellenbosch In 1687 he gathered a few pioneers and crossed the Helshoogte mountains to the valley where Franschhoek lies today. Paarl got its name from the enormous pearl shaped rocks on top of the mountain, guarding the town. The first expedition eastwards from the fort in Cape Town took explorers near the Somerset West valley in 1655.
